[DAY 2] 2026 ¡Vamos, Brasil!
Hello, beloved Saenuri brothers and sisters! This is "Maybe John PD" greeting you, having finally passed through the Amazon to arrive at our riverside village! Thanks to the fervent intercessory prayers and love you continue to send as you read these mission journals, we safely spent our first night in Manaus. And today, our second day in Manaus, Brazil, has finally dawned! Today, our mission team traveled down the Amazon River to a riverside village, where we spent the day preparing for the VBS and medical mission work that will officially kick off tomorrow (Day 3). Let's take a look at our mission team in Manaus and the riverside village! Thank you to God for providing our daily bread today, and to the Dongsan Church staff for their hard work and careful preparation! The bread you see on the left is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. We made sandwiches with it by adding scrambled eggs, ham, and cheese. It was absolutely delicious! Also, though they aren't on the plate in the photo, all the other foods and types of bread were amazing, too! People say you lose weight on mission trips because of the hard work... well... this breakfast filled me with both gratitude and a creeping anxiety that this definitely won't be the case for me! As you can see, the desserts like papaya, bananas, and pound cake were also delicious! But above all, the most surprisingly delicious thing was the apple! It was seriously as sweet as honey!
And here is our Pastor Hwang skillfully peeling it with a dull table knife... 아주 예쁘게 깎으신 사과 인증-Maybe it's because of the out-of-focus background, but at first glance, it looks like Noel or Joey is here. Proof of the beautifully peeled apple—사과가 꿀사과라 다들 먹어보라며 한 조각씩 잘라서 나눠주시는 두목.. 감사...Because the apple was so sweet, our Boss sliced it up and handed out pieces, telling everyone to try it... So touched... So thankful... And suddenly, a table-knife apple-peeling contest began.
Sister Julia clearly showed that her "veteran vibes" were on another level. Using that dull table knife, she peeled the apple skin the thinnest, all the way to the end without a single break! She showed off such amazing skills, I can't even guess how many apples she's peeled in her life! And here is Sister Eunsol's potat... wait, no, apple!
She said it looked like that because she had to cut around a worm-eaten part... but my heart aches for this apple because I'm pretty sure Eunsol ended up eating less of it than the worm did ^_ㅜ그리고 아주 신기한 테크닉으로 사과를 깎는 은숙자매. 나이프 저렇게 쥐고 사과를 저렇게 예쁘게 깎는 사람 보신 분?Next is Sister Eunsuk, peeling an apple with a very unique technique. Has anyone ever seen someone hold a knife like that and peel an apple so beautifully? Pastor Hwang pinky finger... leaving us with no idea just how fiercely he intends to peel that apple.
And that wraps up our apple-peeling contest photos, haha. Oh wait, there was another event during the apple-peeling contest... Can you guess who belongs to these two lost, drooping hands, filled with guilt and sheer embarrassment? It's our "hands of destruction," Brother Jongwoo, the real John, who dropped a pot lid and felt incredibly awkward about it, lol. 정말 감사합니다!...And Minister Sumin and Brother Yongcheon, not missing the chance to capture it on camera, lol. Thankfully, the staff quickly and kindly helped us clean it up, so no one got hurt. Thank you so much! After breakfast, the mission team gathered to organize the VBS supplies for tomorrow and pack the goodie bags to hand out to the kids. Checking if anything was left out, wondering if the kids might need anything else... Minister Sumin pouring her heart into preparing the VBS, hoping that through this time the children will personally meet God and take that back with them. Her shining professional moment! Sister Eunsuk, are you exhausted? We finished packing the goodie bags with joyful and thankful hearts—praying for each and every child God will entrust to us during this Amazon mission, and giving thanks for the opportunity to share the gospel and praise Jesus with them. Everyone, do you know what the ultimate symbol of power is in the Amazon?
It's not out-of-season Dujjonku (chewy cookies) or butter mochi.
It’s the mosquito repellent bracelet. Word is that the moment Brother Sungmin opened the mosquito supply bag, an "open run" line instantly formed... Sister Eunsol, deeply moved after successfully surviving the open run and securing her mosquito bracelet! Even Sister Julia (Oh) is no exception before the absolute power of the mosquito bracelet! Your two hands just automatically come together in absolute politeness. (단호)Pastor Hwang is no exception to this either. (Sternly)많은 이들이 모기 팔찌 오픈런에 줄을 서는 중에도 세상 가장 평온한 표정으로 파워냅중인 민지 자매 (진짜 자는 중)창문으로 들어오는 햇살과 분위기와 모든것이 마치 화보 세트장 같아서 사진을 안 찍을 수 없었습니다 ㅎㅎ!Sister Minji, taking a power nap with the most peaceful expression in the world while the masses line up for the mosquito bracelet open run (she is genuinely asleep).
With the sunlight streaming through the window and the overall vibe, it looked like a photoshoot set, so I couldn't resist taking a picture! And then, a spontaneous worship session with the sisters of Dongsan Church! Even though the languages we speak are different, it was an incredibly overwhelming and thankful time to praise our one and only Jesus Christ and God together! Hallelujah! :)Next, we moved to the port. Today, we are taking a boat to the riverside village. We'll be staying at a church in the riverside village for a few days, continuing our VBS and medical mission work in the local area.
Here is a picture of the boat we’ll be taking today, docked and waiting for us. The mission team swiftly loading the luggage and boarding the boat, along with the Dongsan Church staff who are joining us for this riverside village mission! Sharing some photos we took together on the boat heading to the riverside village! This river is called the Rio Negro. I looked it up, and it's the largest tributary of the Amazon River and the largest blackwater river in the world. As you travel down the Rio Negro, you pass the point where it meets the muddy-brown main stem of the Amazon River that we are all familiar with. It creates an incredible spectacle where the clear, dark water of the Rio Negro flows side-by-side with the muddy Amazon main stem for over 6 kilometers without mixing! That muddy-brown water in the photo that almost looks like land is the main stem of the Amazon River, officially called the Solimões River! The Amazon sky was so beautiful, I just had to capture it in photos and videos! On our way into the Amazon riverside village, we stretched out our hands toward the village from the boat and prayed together, taking time to praise God for granting us the grace to preach the gospel on this land. Remembering that it is never a given, but purely God’s grace that allows us, His favored children, to share the gospel, we prepared for our ministry by earnestly asking God to pour out His grace over this land through His people during this trip.
We also took turns drawing crosses prepared by Pastor Hwang and his wife Jiyoung, which had Bible verses written on them. We each engraved our given Word in our hearts and headed to the riverside village.3시간 반 가량 배를 타고 드디어 강변마을에 도착했습니다!After about a 3.5-hour boat ride, we finally arrived at the riverside village :)마을에 도착해서는 한 줄을 만들어 일사천리로 짐을 계단 위에 있는 교회로 옮겼습니다!Upon arriving at the village, we formed a line and swiftly passed the luggage up the stairs to the church in perfect sync! Despite the incredibly hot weather, because everyone shared the burden and looked out for each other, we were able to move all the luggage in no time. As soon as we arrived at the riverside village church, we first took time to pray and thank God. We prayed that God’s glory would be revealed throughout our ministry schedule here, that the Holy Spirit would powerfully hold us so the evil one cannot find a foothold, that we would fully experience the rain of grace poured out from the open gates of heaven, that we would witness the miracles and works God has prepared, and that we could offer a worship of obedience, stepping out with faith and boldness to wherever He calls us. After a short break, we finished setting up and preparing for tomorrow’s VBS on the first floor! Meanwhile, on the second floor, the team finished setting up and preparing for the medical mission ministry! For tonight's dinner, we were blessed with homemade Korean side dishes (stir-fried anchovies, dried radish, and dried squid strips) that the sisters personally made and brought all the way here. And let me tell you, these side dishes were no joke.
It was such a delicious meal that I actually felt sad watching the food on my plate disappear! Just thinking about eating these side dishes again tomorrow makes my heart flutter as I upload this photo right now, haha. After dinner, we got ready for bed early in preparation for the VBS schedule starting tomorrow morning, haha. Just looking at Sister Sieun, you can probably guess what time it is, right? 어떠한 상황속에서도 승리하신 주님을 찬양합니다!PTL!To wrap things up, I’ll leave you with this photo of an uninvited guest who showed up right as we were finishing getting ready for bed, haha. That’s all for today’s mission journal!Starting tomorrow, the mission team’s ministry schedule officially begins! We earnestly hope and pray that this will be a time overflowing with God's grace, where He opens the gates of heaven and pours down showers of blessing as we preach the gospel and fulfill the work entrusted to us—not by our own righteousness or strength, but by proclaiming the power of the name of Jesus Christ. We pray that through tomorrow's worship, God alone will be glorified, and the presence of God, the King of all creation, will be revealed. We would be so grateful if you could pray alongside us whenever you think of us.See you again tomorrow! Praise the Lord who has triumphed in every situation! PTL!
