어제 약속드린 것처럼 오늘 못다한 양화진 이야기를 나눕니다. 

As promised yesterday, I wanted to share the rest of our time at Yanghwajin.

선교사님들의 헌신이 깊이 느껴졌던 시간들.
세대를 이어 하나님의 일하심은 계속됨을 배웠습니다.
어두웠던 조선 땅을 사랑하셔서 귀한 선교사들을 보내신 하나님,
그리고 이 시간 우리를 캄보디아 땅에 보내주시는 하나님.
선교사님들이 조선 땅에 와서 보이신 순종의 마음을 우리에게도 주셔서,
우리의 역할이 크든 작든 하나님의 계획 가운데 작게나마 영광이 되는 은혜를 누리도록
순종의 마음을 주시길 기도 부탁드립니다.

It was a time when we deeply felt the devotion of the missionaries.

We learned that God’s work continues throughout generations.

God who loved the dark land of Joseon and sent precious missionaries,

Is now sending us to Cambodia in our generation.

Just as the missionaries showed obedience in coming to Joseon, we pray that same heart would be given to us

so  whether our role is big or small, we may be part of His glory within His plan.

Please pray that we would be given hearts of obedience.

양화진은 복음을 위해 자신을 밀알로 심은 선교사님들의 헌신이 잠든 곳이었습니다. 그분들은 조선에 복음을 전했을 뿐 아니라, 교육, 의료, 구제사업, 그리고 성경 한글 번역을 통해 이 땅을 깊이 섬겼습니다. 우리가 잘 아는 세브란스 병원, 연세대학교, 배재학당, 이화학당 등 오늘날 우리가 매우 익숙하게 접하는 많은 것들이 선교사님들의 밀알로 맺어진 열매였음을 다시금 깨닫게 되는 시간이었습니다. 역사적 사실을 배우는 것도 뜻깊었지만, 그 무엇보다도 한 분 한 분 귀한 선교사님들을 보내신 하나님의 위대하신 계획과 가장 완벽한 타이밍, 그리고 이 모든 것이 시작된 하나님의 크신 사랑을 느낄 수 있었습니다.

Yanghwajin is where missionaries who gave their lives for the gospel are laid to rest. They didn’t just preach the gospel in Joseon—they served the land through education, medical work, charity, and by translating the Bible into Korean. It was a powerful reminder that many things we are familiar with today - such as Severance Hospital, Yonsei University, Paichai School, and Ewha School—are the fruit of their sacrifice. While learning the history was meaningful, more than anything, we were moved by God’s greater story—His perfect timing, His plan in sending each missionary, and the love that started it all.

여러 선교사님들의 행적도 큰 도전과 감동이 되었지만, 그 뒤에 있었던 하나님과 복음을 향한 조선 사람들의 뜨거운 마음을 지나칠 수 없었습니다. 한글 성경을 나누기 위해 성경 봇짐을 메고 온 나라 구석구석을 무려 백리를 돌아다닌 무명의 봇짐장수들, 성경공부를 하고 싶어 십 리 길을 꼬박 걸어온 이름 없는 자매님, 말씀에 대한 사모함으로 선교사님들께 한글 성경 번역을 간절히 부르짖으며 요청했던 그 시대의 작고 작은 조선인 그리스도인들… 선교사님들은 그들을 “Bible lovers”라고 불렀다고 합니다.

While the lives of the missionaries were deeply moving and inspiring, we could not overlook the passionate hearts of the Korean people who longed for God and His Word. There were unnamed carriers who walked miles across the country carrying bundles of Bibles to share them, a woman who walked long distances just to attend a Bible study, and countless ordinary believers who longed so deeply for the Word that they pleaded for the Bible to be translated into Korean. The missionaries called them “Bible lovers.”

조선인들의 말씀에 대한 사모함과 선교사님들의 순종과 헌신을 통해 성경 66권 전권이 28년 만에 모두 번역되었습니다. 한글이 창제되지 않았거나 조금 더 늦게 복음이 들어왔다면, 온전한 한글 성경은 없었을지도 모릅니다. 어쩌면 복음이 전해지기도 전에 막혔을지도 모르겠습니다. 지극히 낮은 자들을 사랑하시는 하나님의 섭리가 이 가운데서도 나타납니다.
Through the deep hunger of the Korean people for the Word and the obedience and sacrifice of the missionaries, all 66 books of the Bible were translated in just 28 years. If Hangul had not existed, or if the gospel had come later, a complete Korean Bible might not have existed. The spread of the gospel itself might have been delayed or even hindered. In all of this, we see God’s heart—His love for the lowly and His perfect providence at work.

한국을 깊이 이해하고 사랑한 선교사님들의 희생과 헌신을 통해 하나님께서 우리에게 개인 구원을 넘어 사회의 회복까지도 소망하게 하신다는 사실을 마음에 담게 되는 귀한 시간이었습니다.
Through the sacrifice and devotion of missionaries who deeply loved and understood Korea, it became a meaningful time for us to reflect on how God’s work goes beyond individual salvation and leads toward the restoration of entire communities and society.

As we looked at the inscriptions on the missionaries’ gravestones, we quietly brought our time at Yanghwajin to a close.
