Guten Tag! Greetings from Germany.
Yesterday we arrived in Leipzig from Wittenberg, where the Reformation began. Our pilgrimage started early this morning.
The first photo is from the Augustinian Monastery where Luther lived as a monk.

Luther's complete surrender before God was the very thing that made him fearless before both pope and emperor — and usable as an instrument in God's hands. It was from that place of barefoot prostration, having laid everything down, that God's work began.
On the bus this morning, we sang "Bow Before the Lord" — and that monastery portrait came alive.
Just as Luther laid everything down on this ground 500 years ago, may we do the same on this pilgrimage.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. - Hebrews 4:12
This is a verse many of us have memorized before joining discipleship groups or missions. However, reading it again here on this Reformation pilgrimage, it resonates with me in a completely new way.
When the Word of God pierced the soul of a monk meditating on the Book of Romans—stripping away the veneer of falsehood and sparking true repentance—it ignited the Reformation, a fire that shook all of Europe.
Pastor Son cried out that repentance is the very starting point of a revival where a dead spirit breathes again. He urged us to hold fast to the living Word, which works as powerfully today as it did then.
I pray that in each of our lives, the place of repentance where we prostrate ourselves before the Word becomes the beginning of a new revival.
We finally arrived at our first destination, St. Thomas Church.

Standing in the heart of Leipzig for over 800 years, this landmark was originally a Catholic church founded by the Augustinian Order in 1212.
As the waves of the Reformation reached Leipzig, it transitioned into a Lutheran church in 1539, and Martin Luther himself preached here.

In 1519, a debate took place right here in Leipzig that became a decisive turning point for the Reformation. Johann Eck, the leading Catholic theologian of the time, pressured Luther, asking, "Do you deny the authority of the Pope?" Luther publicly declared on the spot, "Scripture alone is the supreme authority."
This declaration—that neither the Pope, nor councils, nor any human authority can stand above the Word of God—became an irreversible turning point. Though it led to Luther's eventual excommunication, that bold confession became the spark for the Reformation across Europe.

St. Thomas Church is also where Bach, the "Father of Music," served. The moment we entered, the massive organ filled the sanctuary with a profound solemnity.
In that magnificent resonance, we naturally reflected on Bach’s ministry.

Pastor Son challenged us deeply regarding the "diligence" of our lives through Bach’s story. Bach remained faithful to this church for 27 years, quietly composing music for God every Sunday. Meanwhile, his contemporary Handel was gaining fame across Europe with his operas.
It wasn't until later, through Mendelssohn, that Bach was rediscovered and hailed as the "Father of Music."
We often grow anxious by comparing ourselves to others and feel shaken when we aren't recognized. But Bach’s life teaches us that in God’s eyes and in His timing, the sincerity the world fails to notice never truly vanishes.
The important thing is not worldly recognition, but whether our diligence is offered solely to God. I hope we can hold onto this question and move forward faithfully in His will every day.

A short walk away stands St. Nicholas Church, the oldest church in Leipzig, built in 1165. Also originally a Catholic church, it became Protestant in 1539, and Luther preached here to proclaim the Reformation.

The grace we received at St. Nicholas Church felt so similar to the story of NCBC.
The prayer meetings that began here in 1982 didn't start with the goal of reunification. They were simple "Candlelight Prayer Meetings" born from a humble desire for free fellowship. However, those small sparks of prayer accumulated into a "Peaceful Revolution" of 70,000 people taking to the streets in 1989. A month later, the Berlin Wall fell. Prayer was the first gate through which God opened history.
The same is true for our Saenuri Church's 120-Day Prayer Meeting. Though we pray for the Vision Center and the next generation, I believe God will use these prayers to accomplish a much greater work than we can imagine. I sincerely hope more congregants will join this place of prayer.
We also pray for the unification of our homeland. Just as the faithful God opened the closed doors of East Germany through prayer—allowing us to stand here today—I believe He will surely open the closed doors of Korea.
I pray for the day when the fire of the Holy Spirit rises again in Pyongyang, once called the "Jerusalem of the East," so that the souls in the North may receive Jesus Christ and enjoy true freedom—and that people from all over the world will flock to witness that revival.
We took time to pray together for these two requests in front of the church.

On our way from Leipzig to Erfurt, we visited Luther’s Stone in Stotternheim. The monument is inscribed with: "Wendepunkt der Reformation" (Turning Point of the Reformation).
This marks the spot where, on July 2, 1505, a young Luther—after seeing his friend struck and killed by lightning nearby—vowed, "I will become a monk!"

On the back, his desperate cry is engraved: "Help me, St. Anne, I will become a monk!"
In that moment when death brushed past him, Luther cried out to St. Anne according to the customs of the time. Yet, the Gospel he would later proclaim with all his might was that we can go directly to God without the mediation of saints. The young man who abandoned his father’s dream of a legal career out of fear of a lightning bolt eventually became the reformer who tore down every barrier between man and God.

From Luther, we learn that when we decide to turn toward God in the midst of fear and collapse, that moment becomes a turning point for our entire lives. May our own places of fear be the turning points God has prepared, leading us toward His direction.

Finally, we headed to Erfurt Cathedral, where Luther was ordained as a priest. Located near the Augustinian Monastery where he lived as a monk, this cathedral is deeply connected to Luther’s early spiritual formation.

The interior of the cathedral is grand and ornate, designed to visually manifest the majesty of God. Yet, it was the very man ordained in this magnificent space who later protested most strongly against the luxury and corruption of the church.
Seeing the splendor of this cathedral helped me understand Luther’s heart, which was broken by the Word. He realized that God dwells not in magnificent buildings, but in a repentant heart—a conviction he reflected in the very first of his 95 Theses, which begins with the call to repentance.

At the cathedral entrance, statues of the Ten Virgins stand in two rows. On one side are faces of peace and light; on the other, expressions of regret and sorrow. We paused there, and the sisters among us made a vow to be like the wise virgins, diligently preparing for the day of Jesus’ return.

We even mimicked the frowning faces of the foolish virgins as a playful yet serious reminder not to let their regret become our own.
Our final stop was the Augustinian Monastery, where Martin Luther lived for six years.

After the lightning incident, Luther entered this monastery and lived a life of extreme rigor. Despite his intense fasting, penance, and all-night prayers, he could never find freedom from the weight of sin. Instead, a deepening sense of guilt and fear of God’s judgment crushed him.
However, in that place of human limitation, Luther began to grasp the truth that only God’s grace—not human effort—can save a sinner. The sparks of the Reformation were ignited in this small monastery. God did not ignore the desperate struggle Luther offered here. When his zeal to reach God through effort was redirected toward faith in God's grace, God used that passion to shake the world.
Pastor Son shared that the same applies to us. It is important to live diligently, but it is more important that our diligence is headed in the right direction. When our direction is aligned with Him, God uses us in ways we cannot imagine.

Returning to our lodging, we ended the day with a service of thanksgiving. The hymn "Grain of Wheat" moved us deeply, connecting the sacrifices and decisions of our spiritual ancestors to our own journey:
"If I can see the Lord, I will give my life and death without reserve. Believing in the Word that I must die to live again, I will become a grain of wheat and wither. Let me live like Jesus."

We meditated on Matthew 24:15-28. Pastor Son warned that if we are not spiritually awake, we might slowly blend into the world’s standards without even realizing we are in the end times.
Just as Luther woke up spiritually before the lightning bolt and made a decision that God used for the Reformation, we must not let ourselves be numbly absorbed by the currents of this world.
We hope to be a people who stay awake daily before the Word, turning our spiritual realizations into life-changing decisions.
