(Good night!)
Today was our last day in Germany. Before crossing over to Zurich, Switzerland, we made a stop in Worms.
Worms was briefly mentioned in the DAY5 mission journal. This is the city where, in 1521, Luther stood before Emperor Charles V, refused to recant his writings, and was consequently stripped of his legal protection by imperial decree. Frederick III then staged a fake kidnapping to secretly transport Luther to Wartburg Castle — the very place we visited yesterday — where Luther spent about 10 months completing the historic translation of the New Testament into German.
The first photo of today's journal features the Worms Luther Monument. Luther's expression is bold and resolute, holding the Bible tightly as he faces the site of the imperial assembly. More details about this monument will be shared below.

This morning's worship service was held on the bus.
Your goodness leads me, Your goodness keeps me I bow before You, giving You my all Your goodness leads me
We lifted up the song "Goodness of God." It was a confession toward the God who leads and keeps us on this pilgrimage, but it also resonated deeply with Luther's own walk — clinging to God's faithfulness through the waves of the Reformation. That is why this song moved us even more deeply today.

We would like to share the grace that came through two passages Pastor Son unpacked for us today.
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." — John 16:33
"I can do all this through him who gives me strength." — Philippians 4:13
Pastor Son reminded us that the direction for those who believe in Jesus is ultimately "rest" and "peace." Yet we often lose that peace when trials come. The greater the difficulty, the further peace seems. But Jesus says, "Take heart, I have overcome the world." Peace is not grounded in circumstances, but in Jesus, who has already overcome.
Luther's ability to be used for God's purposes in the Reformation was not because he had something special. The reason Luther could stand boldly before the emperor and the threat of excommunication was because the Jesus he held onto was greater than all of it. And that Jesus is the same Jesus we believe in today. The One who was Luther's strength is the same One who is our strength today.
What we need is not extraordinary faith or remarkable courage — only to hold onto Jesus, one person at a time.
Perhaps the reason we cannot find peace in the midst of trials is because we are looking at the trials as bigger than Jesus.
May today, on this soil of Worms, standing before Luther's footsteps, be a day where we fix our eyes once again on that Jesus.

We arrived at Worms Cathedral. The actual site of Luther's interrogation is where Heylshof Garden stands today, right beside the cathedral. The building was destroyed by fire and no longer exists, but in its place stands the bronze sculpture "Luther's Big Shoes," created in 2017 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. We each stepped inside those shoes, taking a moment to reflect on what it must have felt like for Luther to stand boldly before the emperor and the empire 500 years ago on this very spot.
"Hier stehe ich. Ich kann nicht anders. Gott helfe mir. Amen."
"Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen."
Behind that boldness was ultimately a plea — "God help me." Luther's courage did not come from within himself. Our hope is that both on this pilgrimage and in the life that follows, we would all live boldly with that same prayer.

There we paused and offered a prayer of thanksgiving. We gave thanks to God who worked through Martin Luther on this land 500 years ago, and for the fact that because of his bold confession, we are able to freely hold onto the truth of God's Word today. We also prayed that, like Luther, our consciences would be captive to God's Word, and that we would live courageously in our own places, depending on God rather than fear.
God help us.

A little further along stands the Worms Luther Monument, erected in 1868.

At the center of the monument stands Luther, holding the Bible firmly in his hand. At his feet sit Wycliffe, Jan Hus, Savonarola, and Waldus — those who came before Luther, crying out for church reform, and who gave their lives through fire and persecution. Upon the blood and confessions they shed, Luther stands.

Surrounding Luther along the wall stand his fellow reformer Melanchthon, scholar Reuchlin, and those who protected him with secular power — Frederick the Wise and Philip of Hesse — encircling him like the walls of a fortress. The entire monument is said to be designed in the shape of a fortress, symbolizing Luther's hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."
This monument tells us that the Reformation was not the achievement of one great man. God worked through countless people over hundreds of years, and at the center of it all was always the one Bible Luther held in his hand. Some paved the way from beneath. Some walked steadily by his side. God used every single one of those places.
Standing before this monument, we quietly asked ourselves — what role are we playing in God's story right now, and are there people walking beside us, holding onto the Word together?

Paratz! Crying out for breakthrough in our lives, just as those who were used by God in this very place hundreds of years ago — we hoped together that we too would be instruments held in God's hands in our own places, and that we would become one page in the history God is writing.

Right next to the monument stood a small bronze tactile model, made so that those who cannot see can experience it through touch. Looking at this small model with its Braille inscriptions, it reminded us of Luther, who translated the Bible into German so that anyone could hold it in their hands.

In the middle of Worms' market square stood the Holy Trinity Church — the largest Protestant church in Worms. Directly across from it stood the grand Catholic Worms Cathedral, carrying a thousand years of history. The sight of these two buildings facing each other seemed to carry the full tension of those events 500 years ago without a single word.

To the accompaniment of Yoon JDSN's harmonica, we sang "How Great Thou Art" together inside the Holy Trinity Church.
How great and mighty is our Lord — my soul sings out!
Looking up at the mosaic of Luther standing alone before the emperor above the organ gallery, raising our voices together to the harmonica on this land soaked in 500 years of history, we felt the greatness of the Lord — greater than any power — with our whole bodies.

Freiheit in Gebundenheit -
Freiheit in Gebundenheit — Freedom in Bondage
This is the paradox Luther spoke of in "The Freedom of a Christian." Through faith, one who belongs to Christ is completely free from law and sin — yet at the same time, out of love, becomes a voluntary servant to their neighbor. We did not receive this freedom for free. Because it was a freedom purchased at great cost by Christ, we hope to live out that freedom by serving others.

On the way down to Switzerland, we were given a brief stop in the beautiful city of Heidelberg to rest. Carrying the grace and impressions from Worms in our hearts, it was a moment to catch our breath. We were grateful that God allowed this margin even in the midst of a demanding schedule.

We loaded ourselves onto the bus headed for Zurich, crossing the Swiss border — a journey of about four and a half hours. As the landscape outside slowly shifted from Germany to Switzerland, we took turns sharing the grace we had received and the places that had left the deepest impression on us.

At the Swiss border crossing, we ran into unexpected heavy traffic. Stuck in the unmoving bus, we held a praise meeting right there inside. On a road that could not move, we raised our hands and voices high, pouring out our hearts to God in worship.

We praise God for bringing us safely across the Swiss border and leading us to our accommodation! The lodging this time did not have much common space for us to gather, so we split into small groups.
We shared our meditation on Matthew 24:36–51, memorized the scripture together, and closed the day in prayer.

We praise the faithful and good God who led us today. Like Luther's paradox — because the freedom we have received was not free, we hope to live lives of loving and serving one another, even on this pilgrimage. We learn so much from the team members who are already quietly living out and practicing that very life.
The halfway point of our pilgrimage has already passed, and now we are running toward the second half. Please pray for the journey that begins in Switzerland tomorrow, for the health of our senior team members, for everyone on the pilgrimage team, and for Pastor Son and Pastor Lee who lead us spiritually.
Gute Nacht!

To God be the glory forever and ever!
