Greetings from Switzerland! Through your prayers, we safely traveled from Zurich to Geneva this morning.
We practically crossed all of Switzerland. We are deeply grateful for this day, with God at the center of our journey and the Holy Spirit pouring out wisdom and insight upon us.
Today our pilgrimage begins in Zurich. We took our first steps standing before a bronze miniature model of Zurich's old city.
500 years ago, reformers rose up in this small city, holding fast to God's Word. Every alley captured in that bronze model carried God's providence, and that history continues through our footsteps today.

Zwingli was the central figure of the Swiss Reformation, leading the reform movement centered in Zurich. His statue — Bible in one hand, sword in the other — embodies the devotion of a reformer who gave his life for the Word.
Zwingli and Martin Luther walked the same road, but from different starting points. Luther began with the question, "How can I be saved?" while Zwingli started from "How do we reform the church and society according to the Word?" The two met at the Marburg Colloquy in 1529, debating fiercely over the meaning of communion, but could not reach agreement — and Protestantism divided into Lutheran and Reformed traditions.
Yet God used the devotion of these two very different men to spread the flame of reformation across all of Europe.
In 1531, Zwingli was killed in battle at Kappel, fighting alongside Protestant forces in a religious war between Catholic and Protestant regions of Switzerland.
Pastor Son reminded us that because we have eternal life, whether we live or die in this world is not what matters most. Abel offered his sacrifice in faith and was killed. Enoch walked with God in faith and was taken without seeing death. The outcomes were entirely different, yet Scripture records both with the same words — "by faith."

For those of us granted eternal life, faith before God is never judged by its outcomes. Standing here on this pilgrimage, we examine not the results of our lives, but the direction of our faith. Together before Zwingli's statue, we prayed — not for what we want, but for what God desires.

We then stood before Grossmünster Church. With its two towers reaching toward the sky, this is the very place where Zwingli took the pulpit 500 years ago. In 1519, when Zwingli was appointed as its preacher, it transitioned from a Catholic cathedral to a Protestant church, and the flame of the Swiss Reformation first ignited here.
Just as a building that has stood for 500 years must be continually repaired and refined to be passed on to the next generation, our faith too must be renewed and rebuilt before the Word daily, so that it may be passed on intact.
Walking a little further into the alleys from Grossmünster, a small fountain came into view — the Felix Manz Fountain.
Felix Manz was Zwingli's disciple. Yet he sought to follow the Word even more strictly than his teacher. "Infant baptism has no biblical basis. Only those who can confess their own faith should be baptized." This single conviction caused him to part ways with his teacher and ultimately be condemned as a heretic.

In 1527, he was martyred by drowning in the Limmat River right here in Zurich. Since he insisted on being baptized again by water, they drowned him in water — a cruel punishment.
The Anabaptists persecuted by Zwingli later gave rise to the Mennonites and Amish, and became the roots of the Baptist and evangelical church traditions today. A reformer persecuted another reformer — yet God held even that painful history within His redemptive story.
The history of reformers persecuting reformers is not a distant past. The same question remains alive in our faith and our communities today.
"Is my zeal truly God's zeal?" "How much of my own ego is embedded in what I believe to be right?" "Is this truly God's will, or my own will dressed in God's name?"
The greater our zeal for God, the more easily it can become a tool that excludes those who serve differently, those who think differently, or those standing at a different place in their faith journey. Has our conviction become a sword dividing the community?
The reason we must examine the roots of our zeal — that answer was found at this very river where Manz was martyred.
Manz and his fellow martyrs held fast to the Word without sparing even their lives. Standing before the waters that heard their devotion 500 years ago, we prayed together along the Limmat River — asking God to grant us a reformation of faith that holds fast to the Word and moves forward.

But the seeds that Manz's Anabaptists planted did not stay in Switzerland.
The theology of the persecuted Anabaptists flowed to the French Huguenots, then carried on to the English Puritans. They sailed on the Mayflower seeking purer faith — yet persecution repeated itself in the New World. Then Roger Williams stood up and declared, "Freedom of conscience is given by God. No power can infringe upon it." Expelled from the Puritan community, he founded America's first Baptist church in Rhode Island — which became the direct root of the First Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom.
The faith of a young man who sang praises as he drowned in the Limmat River has crossed continents and 500 years of time, and lives on today in the faith of our Saenuri Church community. God used even the scattering of the persecuted as a tool to plant the Gospel.
Without a proper worship space, we held our Sunday service inside the bus. There was a congregational prayer, choir singing, and an offering. Though the space was small, God's presence was no less full.
Just as the early church worshipped in catacombs, in the wilderness, and in prisons — today we offered our worship to God in a moving bus.
Sister Song Hye-kyung held up the sheet music, and Pastor Son held the microphone. Each small act of service came together to make a more beautiful worship service than any sanctuary.
Today's sermon was from 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18.
"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
1. Rejoice Always This is not a matter of emotion. Joy is not a feeling that comes when circumstances are good — it is a posture of faith that flows from the fact that we are saved. A joy that remains unshaken regardless of our environment can only come from our relationship with God through salvation.
2. Pray Continually This means never letting the connection between God and us be broken for even a moment — staying linked to Him always, as naturally as breathing, as naturally as walking.
3. Give Thanks in All Circumstances This is not about being thankful only for good things. Giving thanks means trusting and hoping in God's sovereignty over all things. The reason we can give thanks even before what we cannot understand is because we know the God who governs all of it.
This Word proclaimed in a moving bus — we pray it fills our entire pilgrimage with joy, prayer, and gratitude.
A small and adorable offering bag made its rounds.
Just as we shout Praise the Victorious Lord (Seung-Ju-Chan) after every service at Saenuri Church, today in our bus sanctuary too, we raised our hands high and shouted together.
On the way to Geneva, God gifted us with His vast creation. Standing on this mountain where the legend of Pontius Pilate lingers, we could only gasp — no words could capture the sight.

Snow-capped peaks and the sweeping landscape below — the greatness of the God who created all this with a single word was felt throughout our entire bodies.
The God who makes a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert seemed to speak to us through this majestic nature spread before us.
"I who made all this — can I not make a way in your life? What you still cannot believe — can I not accomplish it?"
God gave us this creation as a gift, for us to enjoy. And by placing us before its vastness, He helped us see visually just how small the things are that have been tripping us up.
We then boarded the bus for the 3.5-hour journey from Pilatus to Geneva. The bus was filled with worship. Those who felt moved in their hearts shared prayer requests one by one, and together we brought them before God. Through prayer and praise, the 36 pilgrims united their hearts as one.

With about 2 hours still remaining, the rotating fellowship continued inside the bus. God allowed us to meet those we hadn't yet connected with, share our lives, and share the grace we had received — multiplying that grace in a small miracle.

After 3-4 hours of unceasing worship, prayer, and fellowship, we safely arrived in Geneva. It was a long journey, yet it felt short because we were together.
At the accommodation, there wasn't enough space for everyone to gather, so we split into small groups of three or four. And in those small gatherings, God granted us even deeper eye contact and more honest sharing of our hearts.

From the alleys of Zurich, to the summit of Pilatus, to arriving in Geneva — God's guidance was upon every step we took today. Walking in the footsteps of those who led reformation through the Word, we were reminded once again that we too are pilgrims, called to live by the Word in our own places.
Today, the bus became a sanctuary and the alleys became places of prayer — reminding us that wherever we go is the Kingdom of Heaven. This community that carried each other's prayer requests and shared each other's grace — it was itself a gift from God.
We pray that God will continue to walk with us on this pilgrimage tomorrow. IAC Seung-Ju-Chan!
